Ants thrive in the warm and sunny climate of South Africa. Out of the thousands of species of ants the main pest species are the black/garden ant and the pharoahs ant. They both travel far in search of food and will cluster around any food source they find. Pharaoahs ants often feed in rubbish bins and drains and therefore can pick up pathogens which they will walk into your living area. This can be dangerous if they infect food in the home. It is very important to seek professional help as worker ants can start new colonies if the main colony is under attack.
- What to look for: • Ants in the home – If you see large numbers of ants walking around you most probably have an infestation. This is particularly concerning if they are found in your kitchen or wherever you prepare food. • The nest – It will look like little hill with an entrance at the top. An ant nest in your home will be much more difficult to find. • Trails of ants – Trails of ants seemingly moving from the outside to the inside or vice versa. Ants will leave a chemical scent for other ants to follow.
